Google Chrome Extensions?

Why do some Google Chrome Extensions fail to function on some tabs(chrome://*)?

  • I recently found out that some Chrome Extensions(like Vimium, Shortcut Manager) fail to work on some tabs: 1. tabs that start with "chrome://" 2. newly opened tabs 3. https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/dbepggeogbaibhgnhhndojpepiihcmeb Does anyone know why?

  • Answer:

To answer each case specifically: We block extension access to chrome:// pages because they have elevated privileges - an extension with access to chrome:// would be able to access your settings page and change any setting it liked, delete your data, etc. Your extensions may not be working on newly opened tabs because they're waiting for the page to be fully loaded before kicking in. We don't allow extensions to run on the store, because then they would be able to install other extensions without your permission.

It's blocked for security reasons. I can't find a reference for this at the moment (anyone?) but at least for the Extension Gallery, extensions do not work on that site to prevent anyone tricking users to install a malicious extension. For chrome:// URLs there seems to be a similar reason.
