If one has the spare time to learn web development and design but already has a college degree, what's the best way to learn?

Is there a class in NY? A short program? An online program that's actually good? Also, I'm only interested in learning Wordpress design but I don't want to use templates. I want to be able to be creative. Don't need a degree in web design or development to get a job as I already have one.

To be creative in Wordpress you will need knowledge in design (Typography, Layout, ...) and development (HTML, CSS, some PHP, some Javascript). You can learn all of this online or from books. To learn the basics on the development side: If you don't have a background in programming I would recommend: Freeman, Robson (2011): Head First HTML5 Programming If you already are comfortable writing code you can just stick to tutorial sites and reference books. Once you have an understanding of the basic code you should look at existing templates, understand how they work, adapt them, and then finally build you own from scratch.

Modern frameworks like Symfony (PHP) & Angular (JavaScript) have amazing step-by-step tutorials. Jobeet (symfony) was a long favorite before I saw Phonecat (angular) which was powered by Git. It provides a systematic introduction to features, with adequate theory, intent & application.
