What are the best resources to learn web design, for those with a background in graphic design?

  • What are the best resources (i.e. tutorials, video keynotes, blog posts, etc) that best assist graphic designers understand the paradigm of website design? As a web designer, I'm really interested in having my sister (a graphic designer) working with me. How to best explain her how to design for the screen, with practical and easy-to-learn resources (i.e. how to build website layouts for the web) without having to spend time with books?

    For the big picture you might look into Treehouse, which has a fantastic archive of professionally produced videos introducing web design and user experience combined with an informal learning curriculum (it's fun even for advanced web designers). For inspiration  Dribbble and Usabilla Discover are my picks. Both highlight small and beautiful details of the user interface, which make them especially great for a new web designer to quickly see what works and resonates today. http://teamtreehouse.com http://dribbble.com/tags/web http://discover.usabilla.com At design school I met a lot of graphic designers who wanted to make this transition. The above resources are a great start but to segway from print and poster design you also need to understand the basics of user experience. I always suggest a quick read with lots of great diagrams called The Elements of User Experience by Jesse James Garrett.

Read Steve Krug's "Don't Make me Think", and Jakob Nielson's "alertbox" blog posts. They won't help you to create beautiful layouts, but they will teach you how the medium of web pages differs from that of print. Your clients, and their sites' users will be grateful!

If she is interested in pursuing it as a career and working with more clients an online class might be helpful as well.
