Should I find a technical co-founder or a business co-founder?
-
I have strong technical skills: Analysis of algorithms. Ability to grok new languages and APIs quickly. I have weak technical skills: I don't have much web programming experience. (Mainly backend and data crunching.) I can write basic webapps, but haven't written anything with > 1K LOC. I have strong business skills: Despite no formal training, I enjoy and have at least above-average skills at pitching, sales, and marketing. I have weak business skills: I have little domain-expertise, so it is difficult for me to find vertical-specific problems that people would pay to have solved. Further points to consider: I envision myself as the CEO, not the CTO, because I prefer to be the visionary. This is not hard-and-fast, but I should note it. Also, at this point in my life, I prefer not to code 10 hours a day, which is what the CTO does until one retains staff. If imagine finding a technical partner, and discussing several ideas and picking a good one. Then, I would focus on customer validation, while he does the technical implementation, but we would both discuss architectural issues and issues related to technical strategy. Even though this is my preference, would the company be more likely to succeed if I find a business partner who has domain expertise?

Answer:
The company is more likely to succeed if you have a viable business idea. It's hard enough to find co-founders (especially technical ones) when you already have an idea, possibly even a prototype, that I can't imagine how will you approach a stranger to brainstorm ideas, possibly his if you already know that you are not good at identify problems people would pay to have solved.
