Delta American Express Skymiles?

How does the American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card compare to the American Express Gold Delta Skymiles card?

  • What's obvious: Non-Delta card has slightly higher annual fee Non-Delta card has 3x points on airfare purchases instead of 2x Non-Delta card points can be used at any airline Delta card provides free checked first bag and premier boarding Seems like the ability to use the points at any airlines would be a huge advantage over the free checked bag and premier boarding... unless I always flew Delta (which is probably possible to do). Am I missing any key differences?

  • Answer:

You aren't missing anything, the cards are fairly similar. American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card 3x on Airfare / 2x on Gas and Groceries / 1x Everything Else, +25,000 sign-up bonus, fee waived first year American Express Gold Delta Skymiles Delta Skymiles Gold; 30,000 Skymiles bonus when you spend $500 in 3 months, first bag checked free, priority boarding, fee waives for first year, 1 mile for every dollar spend, 2 miles for Delta purchases Most people find the generic AmEx cards better (by a small margin) as you can deposit points into airline accounts that aren't in your name. Multiple airline support is also beneficial if you aren't sure Delta is your preferred airline.

The American Express PRG is the better card for three reasons: You earn Membership Rewards points which are much more valuable than Delta SkyMiles because they can be used at many other airline and hotel partners, including Delta, British Airways, Hilton, etc. When spending on Delta, you'll earn 3x Amex MR points with the PRG card, but only 2x Delta SkyMile on the Delta card. That's huge if you plan to fly Delta often. This doesn't even include the 2x points you earn on gas and groceries with the Amex PRG. Amex PRG is a charge card, which means you have to pay off the statement balance in full every month. The Delta card allows you to revolve a balace. This is a win for the PRG because it kind of forces you to be responsible as you can't accumulate debt with the card. Additionally, since the PRG is a charge card, it has a no-preset spending limit, which means you can spend more on it than you could with the Delta card. The only way the Delta card wins is if you fly less than 25,000 miles a year on Delta. If you fly more than that, you'd earn at least silver status, which gets you a free checked bag and priority boarding anyway, thereby negating the Delta card's biggest advantages over the Amex PRG. The only disadvantage of the Amex PRG is the higher annual fee. (One benefit not mentioned that the Delta card does have is that you can access Delta's SkyClub airline lounge for $25 rather than the typical $50)
