How can I start my own portal?

How can someone moving to India get involved with the start up scene there?

  • I started my own company straight out of college, but recently had to leave it. Luckily for me, I have a strong family business to come back to. The bad news is that I have to move to Mumbai for around 12-16 months to train and learn the business. I've spent the last year immersed in a start up ecosystem, and I'm hesitant to just give that up. So I want to really make the most of time in Mumbai by getting involved with start ups there. My reasons for this are: 1. Learn. I've learned so much this past year and I'm loathing to throw it all away. Technology and business are rapidly changing and I don't want to lose my finger on the the pulse. 2. Network. I really want to start connecting start ups and awesome entrepreneurs to my family business' industry. There is so much potential for change in my industry and start ups are often the best catalyst for that. 3. Come back: Ultimately I want to come back and do another start up. I'm already working on a side project right now that may turn into something bigger later on. If that's the case, I want to make sure I'm already involved in a start up ecosystem to increase the chances of success. 4. Give back: I also think that because I worked on a start up here in the States, I might be able to bring some resources or knowledge of my own to people in Mumbai. I really do believe in paying it forward, and the people of Boston have been so kind to me that it's now my turn to pay it forward. Anyways, apologies for the long question, but I think you get the gist of it. I appreciate any suggestions or advice.

  • Answer:

Not sure why you think having to move to Mumbai for 12-16 months is "bad news" This is the most entrepreneurial city in India - and perhaps only next to Shanghai in Asia. If you want to plug into the ecosystem here, join TiE Mumbai, or come to a Startup Saturday event, or Headstart, or.. so many digital-community meetups that happen all the time. This is a large market, waiting for entrepreneurs. Give it a shot :-)

The startup scene in Mumbai is much better than what it is elsewhere in India. Bettered only by Bangalore. Networking: The best way to network will be to attend events that are targeted at entrepreneurs. You'll find that there are several events that are being held all across every month. Also, Pune (2-3 hour drive from Mumbai) is where the startup culture is fostering at the moment. I am sure you will meet a lot of individuals over there who can help you in your growth. Wish you all the best.

In addition to Rakesh's answer, I would like to add..... The good part is most of the networking and startup related events are happening in the weekends. So you can continue with your family business as well as stay in contact with the startups around.

Why only to Mumbai, why not to Bangalore and Hyderabad. These are also startup happening hubs in India. Bangalore is the most regarded startup city in India and silicon valley of India. Hyderabad races next to Mumbai however. Telangana Government is supporting the startup eco-system in Hyderabad. Try to Travel and explore the cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai to find the right attitude and answer to your quest.
