What Is The Mentor Network?

Should the Australian National Broadband Network (NBN) Organisation be actively employing community-based evangelists to mentor/educate/evangelize how best to leverage the potential of the NBN in local communities?

  • Answer:

I don't think it would be a bad idea necessarily to encourage community level evangelising, and I'm not sure it should cost money. It could be part of the overall business model too (look at what Altibox is doing in Norway) in which case it would hardly be wasting money. However, at the minimal level, setting up online tools, information packs and fora for people who want to evangelise in their communities shouldn't cost much if anything and can't do any harm...

No. The NBN will be best evangelized by must-have applications. Attempts by the NBN Organisation to evangelize it to the community will leave it open to too much criticism for wasting money (which in that case I think would be justified), and be likely to do as much harm as good (sooner or later someone is going to realize that just saying "telemedicine" over an over again isn't very useful)

On the surface, this kind of advocacy sounds great, but when it's time to transform paper-based plans into reality, the process may not be as smooth or simple as it appears. There will always be people who'd be critical of the effort and expenses required for this "educational program." Other would-be pundits may even be doubtful about the extent of broadband coverage the NBN can supply all across Australia. Personally, I've always viewed these massive efforts to educate the public as good and true. Encountering dissent actually leads to more fruitful discussions about the NBN project. This may even encourage the public to open up and see where this new technology can lead us.
