In Music & Lyrics there were two songs closely fitting the story line. Were they tailor-made when the original screenplay was written, or done after the movie was already in shape, or initially composed as independent songs and later adjusted for the movie?

The two songs I remember are "Don't Write Me Off" and "Way Back Into Love." Not only did the two songs (especially the latter) had important presence and relevance in the movie's plot, but the lyrics also perfectly relate to some particular lines in the movie. For example, "I need inspiration, not just another negotiation," "despite the fact that you killed all my plants," just to name a few. I wonder how the songs were composed to fit in the movie so well? As IMDB suggests, both songs were written by Adam Schlesinger, and the Screenwriter and Director of Music and Lyrics was Marc Lawrence. Did they collaborate from the very first stage of creating this screenplay?

Answer:
Adam Schlesinger from "Fountains of Wayne" (same guy who wrote that ridiculously catchy song from "That Thing You Do") wrote the songs for "Music and Lyrics" based on the initial Marc Lawrence screenplay. Interesting article about that, here: http://www.avclub.com/articles/adam-schlesinger,14092/

Great film and music, wasn't it? I was really surprised at Hugh Grant's surprisingly on-key singing voice. He also played some basic piano in the film, as well. Pretty impressive, considering he's neither a singer nor musician. Here is a short interview with director Mark Lawrence and composer Adam Schlesinger, who wrote the songs for the film. The lyrics were much too specific to have been done the other way around. :) http://movies.about.com/library/weekly/blmusicml020707.htm More info here. http://movies.about.com/od/musicandlyrics/v/musicml020707.htm Adam Schlesinger bio here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Schlesinger He has quite a bit of experience writing songs for film and has been nominated for an Academy Award, Golden Globe and two Grammy Awards. Schlesinger wrote and co-produced the title song to Tom Hanks' directorial debut, That Thing You Do!. He composed and produced several original songs, including Way Back into Love, for the 2007 film Music and Lyrics, starring Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore. His music has also been featured in films such as Shallow Hal (which he scored with Ivy); Robots; There's Something About Mary; Me, Myself & Irene; Josie and the Pussycats; Scary Movie; Art School Confidential; Fever Pitch; The Manchurian Candidate; Because of Winn-Dixie; Orange County; Two Weeks Notice;,[13] and others. If you liked Music and Lyrics, I'd also highly recommend That Thing You Do! (1996), with Tom Hanks. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117887/ Schlesinger also wrote many of the songs from that film. The entire soundtrack is awesome.
