How to open google latitude on iphone from google maps?

Why doesn't Google Maps in iPhone include the terrain layer?

  • Google maps on the web, and the Google maps app on Android both contain a "terrain" layer which shows topology and contour lines. However, the iPhone Google Maps app only contains Standard and Satellite layers. Is there any way to activate the terrain layer on iPhone?

  • Answer:

Apple is responsible for and in total control of developing the Maps app on iOS, not Google. Apple decides which of the features and data Google offers in its Maps API they wish to include in their iOS app. That's why Google has a seperate Google Earth app for iOS which has different features. Note that the app itself is not called "Google Maps", but just "Maps" - Apple has just happened to use Google to provide the maps and location data for the app since the iPhone's launch, and could switch to another provider. Apple has been acquiring a lot of mapping companies, and hence it's strongly rumoured/suspected that they'll develop their own mapping system to replace Google's map data in iOS 6, to be released later in the second half of 2012. This is already beginning to happen, with their new iOS iPhoto app using mapping data and maps from the open-source OpenStreetMap.
