What are good books for learning english?

What are some good books for learning German when one already knows English, French and Latin?

  • Answer:

    Asterix und Obelix. Written by a Frenchman and using lots of Latin in almost always inopportune places, learning German from this comic book series is almost always my advised path. Now, mind you, you should have a basic grasp of the language but once you do that and given there's a dictionary nearby nothing teaches German faster than Asterix und Obelix.

I'm not an authority on book translations but Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge's job on the Astérix series is one of the finest sets of translations into English I've ever seen. Fantastic humour. Really made my holiday (s) back in the 80s.
