Do I get extra charge if I cancel an order from amazon.com?

Why does Dell put an order that is delayed indefinitely into "In Production"?

  • I ordered a Dell Streak from them in November and was notified the next week that it would be delayed indefinitely. I wanted to get the phone right away, so I tried to cancel after they notified me of this - they told me it was impossible, since it was "in production". I'd have to wait for them to ship it (with no estimate of shipping or deliver), then return it. I'm still not sure if they will charge me a restocking fee on this order. This policy seems insane. Why not let me cancel that order if it won't be available? FWIW, the phone I ordered in November from Dell has still not arrived. I ordered one off eBay on Dec. 6 and got it Dec. 7.

  • Answer:

I'm a brand manager at Dell and I will add to Michelle's answer for your specific case by addressing the broader question of our order status messages: normal Dell policy (and order processes) do allow for "In Production" orders to be canceled. Only "Post Production/Manifest" (essentially sitting on the dock) and "Invoiced" (shipped) orders cannot be canceled. There may be some special circumstances around your order, but IP orders can usually be canceled.
