What jobs require REAL analytics skills and try to understand website consumer behavior?
-
I have an advertising background in Search marketing, and have a real love for Analytics, the kind of Analytics that Avinash Kaushik talks about in his blog, which is uncovering insights, creating dashboards and finding out exactly what a user is doing and how to optimize to maximize your conversions.. But the fact is that Analytics jobs in an Agency are just glorified excel number crunching roles that require to put out reports for the teams. i.e managing the data from DFA etc. What kind of jobs require website analysis that gets you involved in working with UI/UX teams to improve stuff, or doing a A/B test to improve numbers and how do you get into that role? The agency world doesn't satisfy my love for trying to improve things for a client because most of the time's your hands are tied because things are out of scope or a different teams responsibility..Ignore my rants, but do help out with my job questions. Thank you!

Answer:
I do agree with . It's not so much about the industry but the specific company you work for. Especially in advertising (disclaimer I was working for OgilvyOne and another WPP company in Beijing). There are huge differences among agencies within one network, sometimes even within one large agency (those who have dedicated departments for clients). Often the ones with the strongest focus on creative output, are least interested in scientific backup for user behavior. What I would do is to get in touch with recruiters who look for talent on a group/ holding level (Publicis, Omnicom, WPP etc.) via Linkedin. They might know best the requirements for their agencies and can direct you where your skills/ interest are most needed and welcome.

I believe that within agencies you can find great opportunity, you just need to find the one that has a real expertise in Analytics, and even an analytics dept. The one certified by Omniture, Webtrends, Google Analytics premium, or AT Internet (that I represent) will have opportunities. Also companies and final clients can be rigid in changing tags and adding variables, I recommend looking for an opportunity with a Tag Container company too and an agency reselling those products. If you really want to work on the client's side, Business analysts, insight specialists, predictive analytics consultants are the type of jobs you'll have more to do than crunch excel data :) Hope this helps Antoine
