What is the best way to approach large and/or small retailers with a patented consumer product with potential mass-market appeal?

    1) You need a sample. 2) Generally, you need to prove demand (via independent retail and/or online) before going to a big box retailer. 3) To get small independent retailers to buy-in you will need a display, expected ship date, and suggested retail price that gives the retailer at least 2.5x markup (depends on category though). Once you've done this, you can contact retailers individually and I'd recommend getting a booth at a relevant trade show.

A retailer would always like a product that has decent consumer appeal and low distribution. Low distribution products that have a loyal 'preference minority' build loyalty for the store. I would treat the retail store as an enabling platform and design my product display, shelf appeal and dispensing to work without any store effort, directly with the customers.
