How does blog comment spam work when it uses Facebook profiles?
-
Recently my blog has experienced a rush of comment spam, which on the face of it looks kosher, because it directly addresses the subject of the post. However, there's always some grammar error or typo which suggests theĀ commenter is foreign or illiterate. More critically, the email address given is usually international (my blog subject is very local) and the web address given is ALWAYS a Facebook profile, I've followed some of these profiles (using a dummy FB account, not my own) and where they include any detail, it's usually someone foreign, often in another language. My question: How does this spam work? It's clearly spam, because it's working to a pattern. (My blog allows open comments, which I then approve for publishing. I don't like captcha and don't want to inflict it on others)

Answer:
People purchase services, or programs for generating comment spam. For those that know how to program, it's as simple as spidering the web for sites that have comments open with weak captchas. Then running the post through an algorithm to come up with a relavent title. I'm dealing with one guy that just hit a site of mine with 100 spam comments in the past 24 hours. What I did: 1. Set up a free service like ReCaptcha on your forms. 2. Whois the IP address of both the site that the link takes you too, and the ip of the person that posted the comment, and report them to IP owners abuse department. It's usually some hosting company. 3. Block or redirect the IP address in your .htaccess file.
