How to totally consume bandwidth?

How much bandwidth does a feature-length movie consume when streamed through Netflix?

  • Answer:

At the highest quality, Netflix is said to use 3.8 megabits/sec for a high-definition movie. For a two-hour movie, that's 3.2 gigabytes.

Netflix has 3 types of streaming qualities. This is what they say: Good: Will use up to 0.3GB/hour. This means that you need a minimal stable connection of at least 0.7Mbit/s. Better: Will use up to 0.7GB/hour. This means that you need a minimal stable connection of at least 1.6Mbit/s. Best: Will use up to 2.3GB/hour when streaming HD content. This means that you need a minimal stable connection of at least 5.3Mbit/s. They say Best will be usual using around 1.0GB/hour (non HD) that means that it will need a stable connection of at least 2.3Mbit/s. The numbers are true when your internet connection is stable. But the max speed of your internet connection is never stable, so don't expect to stream HD content with a 6Mbit/s internet connection. Also you have to consider that there will be other programs on your PC or maybe other devices using your internet connection. Try some internet speed tests like http://www.speedtest.net/. Try it a couple of times on different times and take the average.

According to Netflix customer service as of 11/2010, the following are their estimated average bandwidth use: Computer: 2.5gb/hour PS3: 2.5gb/hour XBOX 360: 1.5gb/hour I am not sure whether this data is for standard definition or high definition.
