Which degree has good job prospects: Computer science or Electrical and electronic engineering?

Would a masters degree in Computer Science from USC with a specialization in Machine Learning / Computer Vision provide better job prospects as opposed to a masters degree in Computer Science from a higher ranked university with the same specialization?

  • I am interested in working in the commercial domain on products that employ Artificial Intelligence / Computer Vision based technology.  Does a masters degree in AI/ML/CV from a university such as USC provide an advantage ?

    It's highly doubtful. USC has a good CS department, and I wouldn't hesitate to attend if (a) I was okay with California and (b) the usual top suspects (CMU, Stanford, Berkeley, MIT) did not admit me. With that being said, the aforementioned schools have amazing faculty, receive tons of funding for research (and thus produce lots of research), and have lots of connections to top industry jobs. If one of them admitted me, I would accept and turn USC down.

I'm not a USC grad, but the USC alumni network is astoundingly great.  Given that your question was about job prospects, this is relevant.  Also, no matter how good a school is academically, don't forget that most of your learning will occur after graduation, so academic differences will diminish in influence as you progress in your career.  A stellar technical brand name lasts for life, but an active, helpful alumni network accelerates you NOW.
