How can I find out my local temperature on a past day?

Meteorology: Is there a way to find the *real* average temperature of a day?

  • As in, not just (high+low)/2, but rather, something that takes hourly averages or averages over even finer scales?

  • Answer:

Most stations report daily averages. I know utility companies may calculate heating degree days and cooling degree days on an hourly basis. For most stations you can generally get hourly observation data so you should be able to easily calculate.

Virtually all modern weather stations save the high and low even if they don't occur at one of the set observation points.  In the bad old days of analog technology most weather stations had a maximum/minimum thermometer set.   So, for any but the most amateur weather stations one can get a 'real' average.

http://wunderground.com lists many personal weather stations (PWS) that measure and record temperature every 5 minutes (some even more often)
