What are the main features of a community web site?

System Administration: What is the best tool and/or practices for being alerted when a web site (or some of its features) become unavailable to users?

  • The constraints are that: availability is defined as the ability for a user to access the site & carry out simple functions on it; the sites involved require users to authenticate before accessing most of the features & the functions which should be shown to be available require this prior-authentication; some of the features on the sites which require their availability to be proven are accessed through a Silverlight application; the client will not countenance storing credentials with a third party as it perceives this as an unacceptable risk.

  • Answer:

At a previous company I used to run a series of Selenium scripts several times a day via Cruise Control and report back via email and Big Visible Cruise, to perform a very similar check. It will work for you in most situations, outside the silverlight application. I haven't done that.

I recommend Keynote You have two ways to monitor your dot com front end by either external agents that do a real time availability check on each page/ feature/ script/app and you pay per agent btw Second is by configuring internal agents within your dot com environment so also monitors and helps to isolate the cause if any issues whether its internal or external. Awesome tool
