Are there any Christmas songs with summer imagery for the Southern Hemisphere?
-
There are lots of songs with winter imagery: Let It Snow, Winter Wonderland, White Christmas, etc. Are there any songs about going to the beach or flying a kite or whatever family traditions exist around Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere?

Answer:

There's "Kiwi Jingle Bells" - âDashing to the bay, In a Kombi campervan, Christmas at the beach â The familyâs master plan. Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way, Christmas in New Zealand on a sunny summerâs day, ay!â and so on:

This song is in Afrikaans...we have many summer Christmas songs, but this particular one is very popular. The words relate to the birth of the Christ child, and a plea for a "crystal clear summer Christmas" in our land.

The Christmas carol "Te Harinui" (Maori for "Good News" or "The Gospel") tells the story of the first Christmas sermon preached in New Zealand in 1814. The lyrics are: Not on a snowy night By star or candlelight Nor by an angel band There came to our dear landTe Harinui Te Harinui Te Hari-nu-i Glad tid-ings of great joy But on a summer day Within a quiet bay The Maori people heard The great and glorious word The people gathered round Upon the grassy ground And heard the preacher say I bring to you this day Now in this blessed land United heart and hand We praise the glorious birth And sing to all the earth

CHRISTMAS DAY The North Wind is tossing the leaves, The red dust is over the town, The sparrows are under the eaves, And the grass in the paddock is brown; As we lift up our vices and sing To the Christ-Child the Heavenly King. The tree-ferns in green gullies sway; The cool stream flows silently by; The joy bells are greeting the day, And the chimes are adrift in the sky, As we lift up our voices and sing To the Christ-Child the Heavenly King. (I think by John Wheeler).
