How can I get research experience outside the college setting?

How can I get into college with a 3.0 unweighted GPA and science research experience?

  • High school 3.0 unweighted GPA. Science Research experience. No Sports. Want to go to Georgia TECH FOR PRE MED. What chances I have?

  • Answer:

Get really good recommendations, particularly from whoever you were doing science research with. Is your weighted GPA good? That probably matters more than your unweighted GPA. Also, make sure you do well on standardized tests--both the math and science ones, and the fuzzier, language and literature-type ones. It would be a lot easier to answer your question if you could indicate what year you are in high school and what other extracurriculars you have.

Go to community college for the first year and earn very high grades.  Make sure the credits can be transferred.  It will save you money and give you a better chance of getting into GT. By the way, GT does not offer a pre-med degree.  There are various programs of study that will prepare you for the MCAT (Bio, Bio Eng, etc.).  http://www.biology.gatech.edu/undergraduate-program/advising/premed.php EDIT: Some more information... Here's an interesting chart... note that some students were accepted via wait list with < 3.0 GPA (so it's not impossible).  I would strongly encourage you to visit the admissions office in person and discuss what you need to do to get accepted.  Discussing your GPA with the admissions councilor could be very important.   http://collegeapps.about.com/od/GPA-SAT-ACT-Graphs/ss/georgia-tech-admission-gpa-sat-act.htm

To get into any college, Georgia Tech or otherwise, you need to make sure you present yourself well.  You should be involved with your community/school.  You might want to use services like LinkedIn or even Facebook to find faculty at Georgia Tech to talk about their admissions process.  You also might want to talk to current students/alumni to see if maybe they can help too.  Colleges don't only look at a GPA -- they want to see that you will contribute to their community too.
