How to design and organize a project?

What is the best way to organize digital files for a design project?

  • Answer:

In terms of a directory structure & naming convention, here's what works for me (although not every project will require every aspect of this, but good to capture most file types): - Branding - Copy - Flats (exported jpgs) - Fonts - From client - Images (sourced imagery, graphics, moodboards) - Project management (briefs, specs, contract, proposal docs) - Source (for all png, psd, ai, etc files) - UX (wireframes, personas, site maps, workflows, etc) - Web ready (any graphics files optimised for web) We also use Basecamp for project management and sharing files with clients.

If you mean which app to use, Basecamp works well if you need to track inline conversations - regarding each file. If you just want to move files around without a lot of commentary associated with each one (online & on your phone). http://Dropbox.com If you are asking about specific efficiency tactics within the design process, one key aspect I recommend is a directory structure and a file naming structure (on your PC/Mac), so you can repeat it for every client/project. This could differ slightly depending on which member of the team you are (UX, Design, Dev etc). I also place sub directories in these for versioning, key walkthrough presentations etc. Here is what I use for UX: Clients -- Client ---- Client Project -------Client_Docs              - Business Reqs, Use Cases, Persona's etc. -------Client_Exported        - All exported files, .jpg/png format. -------Client_Wireframes    - Editable wireframe files. -------Client_Maps&Flows  - Editable site flow, idea maps, information arch files -------Client_Resources     - Any other logo, reference doc etc.

My folder structure for the majority of my projects ClientName -- ClientProject ---- Branding ---- Docs - Documents, letters, contracts, etc ---- etc - all other stuff you don't know where to put ---- Layouts - Here are the PSDs ------ Web ------ Mobile ---- Money - Invoices, bills, payments, etc. ---- Stock - Art or stock images, etc ---- Style - Document describing the Style Guide and color palettes ---- tmp - you'll always need this ---- Wireframes ---- Web - HTML/CSS/JS etc

Over the years I've shifted from being based around deliverables to being based around the process. I think that's a good thing.

You should checkout this tool my company built: http://designsvn.com DesignSvn enables designers to version your designs, collaborate with others and improve the draft-feedback-approval process. By using this system all your designs are organised and you will have a history of changes. The application is currently a MVP, we're working on releasing a desktop app to facilitate the upload process. If you have any questions don't hesitate to get in touch with me. I hope this helps.
