What is enterprise market solutions?

How did Mailchimp market itself in the early days?

  • It feels like it's extremely difficult for a business to market itself for the self-serve market when everyone is going to the enterprise license/tool solutions. Following up on Question:

  • Answer:

MailChimp has existed since 2001 or so. Their story is much different than you might think, and they didn't introduce freemium until 2010 or so. I recommend watching CEO Ben Chestnut's presentation at the UnSexy Conference: http://www.eventnook.com/video/v/509/500startupss-unSEXY-Aug-09-152858-EDT-2012-Part-3-Aaron-Levie-of-Boxnet-at-0000-Ben-Chestnut-of-Mailchimp-at-3230-Revenue-Models-Pannel In the beginning, they went it about it the old-fashioned "ghetto" (as Noah Kagan calls it) way. By the time they went freemium, they had tens of thousands of paying users. Their original trial offer was 25 free emails. They don't target enterprise, or microbusiness, or freelancer. They target "tech savvy weirdos." Watch the video. It's a really refreshing take on business.

Yes the Free option was the initial pull but also the fact that the only two other 'real' options (also free) at the time (Constant Contact and Vertical response) had ugly user interfaces. Mailchimp started off cool and has just got cooler! That matters!

I think just leading with the FREE option led to massive word of mouth advertising. (or what we call Social Media) That's how I heard of them and that's probably how many other people heard of them too.
