I just got HBO Go. What new or old HBO programming should I watch first?
-
What is the best HBO content of all time?
-
Answer:
Watch great drama because there's a lot of great drama out there to choose from. Start with The Sopranos and marvel at just what a great character Tony is. The ending is a surprise but fantastic when you sit down and think it through. Then move on to Deadwood. Even if you hate Westerns you will love Deadwood. Definitely not a show to give a passing level of interest to though. Make sure it gets your undivided attention. The dialogue takes some getting used to but it's great when you've got the ear for it. Then try Rome which is an interesting comparison to Deadwood. Both are about the creation of civilizations and communities and how they come about. Rome is fantastic viewing and you'll probably churn through two series in a weekend. Finally try The Wire. Not like anything else you've ever seen but well worth getting into and justifies the fuss people make of it. All four shows are fantastic, groundbreaking, innovative and assume you're an intelligent viewer with an attention span.

I personally find it hard to get into television, but HBO's Six Feet Under (2001-2005) consistently marveled me and I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned. I think it captured the fears and stagnation of the early double-zeros, particularly the facades and alienation in family relationships. While the other HBO shows are surely great drama, mostly verifiable due to their acclaim, Six Feet Under's "That's My Dog" episode (s4e5) is unforgettable, perhaps life-changing. Don't read the description (or watch it before its precursors) if you want the experience and not just television. A clip from s1e1: My biggest problem with television series are the endingsâusually with such a great time investment, the investors want to see the story, relationships killed off or sunsetted to their satisfaction. In this regard, this series about dying masterfully kills everything completely. It's one of the best finales I've ever seen. Heartily recommended. HBO has produced so much great content. My top recommendations are: The Sopranos - one of the best mob shows ever The Wire (see ) Sex and the City - really pushed the envelope on 30s single life in NYC, and did an amazing job of making the city itself a character. Curb Your Enthusiasm - if you like Seinfeld, you will love this. Boardwalk Empire - brilliant take on Prohibition, set in Atlantic City, about the gangsters who ran things. Game of Thrones - incredible take on George R.R. Martin's epic fantasy series. Entourage (can't believe I initially forgot this) - follows a movie star and his "entourage" of childhood friends and his agent as they party and hustle in LA.

It may not have been groundbreaking like The Sopranos, it may not be widely acclaimed as the Greatest Television Show Ever like The Wire, and it may not be among the most underrated programs ever like Deadwood, but there is something to be said for Eastbound and Down and its ridiculously amazing lead character, Kenny Powers.

In addition to the ones mentioned, absolutely check out Band of Brothers. It's like a long-form version of Saving Private Ryan, except better, because it actually tells the real stories of real soldiers of Easy Company. Also, at 10 episodes, it's a bit shorter time investment than the other series mentioned.

How to Make it in America - edgy/cool Entourage taking place in NYC, critically acclaimed but never caught on. The Neistat Brothers - quite possibly the most unique show ever made. Handmade, yes handmade. Reality TV about the film makers who are shooting it shot by themselves. Unique. Others hit the high points of great drama on HBO already.

Great News that you have got your subscription for HBO GO. I would suggest you to watch the ones that are famous and has good script, the ones specially that you haven't watched till now, then move on to watching the ones that you have watched previously but have missed the episodes. The names of few would be six feet under, The Wire, Sex and the city, My dog's Episode. etc. happy watching .
