Would you rather hire somebody with experience or a college degree?

Would you rather hire somebody with a 4 year degree or somebody with 4 years of experience in the field that you're hiring for?

  • In my opinion, the person with experience is going to benefit your business more.  I've been overlooked several times because I do not have a degree nor do I have time to get one.

  • Answer:

It depends on the field. I would consider both candidates, but without any other information I would go for the four year degree. Experience is great, but all it means is that you've been doing something for a while. A college education isn't meant to be job training. It is meant to take you under the hood and make you deeply understand the math, the science, and the art form behind what you are learning. The four-years experience guy starts out with an edge over the four-year degree guy, but the degreed individual will usually learn faster and have a deeper understanding of their field once they learn it. When you say that you don't have time for a degree, it tells me that you weren't willing to make time. Furthermore, there are three strikes in your question itself that would cause me not to hire you: Your first sentence in your question details is not a complete sentence. You are putting two spaces after a period instead of one. See: You do not capitalize "i" when using it as a proper noun.
