Which is more impressive: nature, or man's power to change the world?

    It's not even a contest. Nature is WAY more impressive than us. Humans began a couple of hundred thousand years ago. Nature started about 14 billion years ago. So it had kind of an unfair advantage. True, we have built pyramids, carved presidents into mountains, written "Hamlet," and produced Poptarts. Meanwhile, Nature has created every planet, start and galaxy in the Universe. We've done extraordinary thinks with our intelligent, creative brains. Nature built our intelligent, creative brains.

When we talk about changing the world, we're essentially looking at our surroundings. We're looking at the 29% of the earth's surface we inhabit. The deepest we've penetrated into the earth is 12 km. That's less than half the crust thickness on land. Our tallest structure is 1 km high at best. (818 m, I think but let's approx. it to 1 km). The earth as such is 6400 km deep. So the fraction of the earth we've really had any impact on is [(13/6400)*0.29] = 0.00058 or 0.058%. A very crude estimate, but it shows how insignificant we are, even on Earth. Now, if you consider that the Earth itself is a very insignificant part of nature, which comprises the entire Universe, you get an idea about how powerful ,or otherwise, we are.
