Why is Facebook's market cap reported differently by Google Finance & Yahoo Finance?
-
As of 1pm EST on 5/23/12 both list a share price of ~31.80. However, Google Finance lists a market cap of ~68B while Yahoo Finance lists a market cap of ~87B. This implies that that the two sites are using a different # for number of outstanding shares. Why the discrepancy, and which one is correct?

Answer:
I would assume it's because there are some funky share class issues. See http://www.newyorker.com/talk/financial/2012/05/28/120528ta_talk_surowiecki With multiple shares classes, I've found Google Finance has had trouble calculating market cap accurately. My rule of thumb when it comes to discrepencies between Google Finance and Yahoo Finance? Go with Yahoo's numbers. I think they've spent more time and energy (and frankly, care more) about getting it right.

On market cap Yahoo finance is usually correct. And it is based on the number of shares. But I would not trust Yahoo Finance blindly. The site makes plenty of mistakes. Facebook has nearly 2.8 billion shares outstanding on a diluted basis. Keep that in mind when you check these sites; that should give you an order-of-magnitude guide. Even with that in mind, the numbers will vary. For example, based on 2.8 billion shares, the IPO was $106 billion; but all the papers say $104 billion and I don't know why that is.

I'm going for the consensus with this one. Yahoo Finance, Google Finance, CNBC and Bloomberg all show a valuation of 62$ Billion at 29$/Share for Facebook. TechCrunch reports 79$ Billion according to the 115$ Billion valuation given at the IPO with 42$/share. For me, what makes sense are the four I mentioned above.
