How to turn screen on during partial wake lock?

Tech Support: Why isn't my Caps Lock or Num Lock buttons working?

  • I use Windows 7, on a 32 bit, on an HP Elitebook, (I am just saying this in case you need to know) and whenever I'd turn on Num Lock or Caps Lock, there would be a small gray rectangle in the lower right hand side of the screen that would say "Nums Lock On", or "Nums Lock Off", or "Caps Lock On", or "Caps Lock on" and this would be very helpful. But recently, for some reason, the notification isn't coming, and I don't think I set anything. Can someone suggest something, please?

  • Answer:

The probable cause of failure is a recent software update. This is usually caused by update - drivers, OS or software from the manufacturer (HP). The keyboard driver is usually specifically adapted for processing keyboard shortcuts and special keys. First I recommend downloading and reinstalling the HP On-Screen Display Utility.viz link below. In case of failure it is necessary to examine the changes that were recently made to the system and return them back or find another solution. But this is not a job for everyone .... http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/swdDetails/?swItem=ob-106851-1&ac.admitted=1379823979882.876444892.199480143

Unless you absolutely require the notification on screen, which can be the case for the visually impaired amongst other reasons, there's no reason to be concerned - as long as the keyboard is working correctly. There is a possibility that the caps and num lock keys are not being registered on a hardware level (faulty or broken keyboard). You can test this by opening any thing to type in (including a Quora question) and type the alphabet without caps on, then with caps on; then with numlock on, type all the numbers (they should appear as numbers) and finally with num lock off type the even numbers (the odd ones do other things, which can confuse you if you're not sure what is what) If the caps lock on produces nothing but small letters, and/or the numlock off produces numbers, then you've got an issue with the keyboard or keyboard controller. You should seek in-person assistance from someone who can better assist you from that point forward. If your keyboard seems to test good, but you really want the software to show on the monitor, then follow Oldrich's post :)
