I'm trying to A/B test two entry paths into a website to see which performs best (i.e. one via a setup-like wizard and another that just has signup)?

What is the best way to determine which entry and next-page path works best? I'm ideally looking for a tool

Answer:
If you are looking to track entries, then I assume you are talking about different ad campaigns. In that case, any analytics package will cover campaign tracking. I've implemented this in omniture, webtrends, and Google analytics. If you are looking to test paths after entry, then you'll want a pure A/B testing solution. I can recommend Google Web optimizer -- wrap your signup form with the A/B tag and set your "B" version to replace the signup form with a link to your wizard sequence. Set the goal on your form/wizard's response page. It should be the same page for either path. Google Web optimizer will set up the race conditions for you to monitor or you can even have it pick the winner. The price is right, too. All you need is a Google webmaster account (or maybe analytics?).

You can track this using Google analytics funnel testing. There are other tools such mixpanel available too. Mixpanel does involve a bit of coding. Solutions such as http://optimizely.com, http://visualwebsiteoptimizer.com are also available but I personally have not yet tried them out. Basically in GA you need to setup 2 funnels and track of them. You can also determine where user falls off in setup wizard like entry path.

My recommendation, make sure you pay attention to traffic sources. If you are A/B testing a page, make sure that you have a reliable traffic channel that's predictable. Measure your test at the same time on the same days. You need to eliminate any variables, weekday traffic behaves differently than weekend traffic. In addition, re-test the test. If you are testing a CTA on a landing page, make sure you check any predicate KPI. A high interest landing page that brings in the wrong audience, leads to lots of other questions, be prepared to support these questions with answers.

This will depend on which vendor you use for web analytics. Here is a link to an old blog post in which I describe how to do this in Omniture SiteCatalyst: http://adam.webanalyticsdemystified.com/2010/11/29/abtest-bounce-rates/ This post talks about Bounce Rate, but if you combine that with this post on Segment Pathing (http://adam.webanalyticsdemystified.com/2009/08/31/segment-pathing/) and treat your AB test ID as the segment, you will be able to see path differences on AB tests...
