How can I connect an Apple TV to normal speakers that are using a 3.5mm audio cable? do I need a converter from optical audio to 3.5mm? what's the best thing to buy?

Answer:
Generally there are 2 kinds of speakers. Passive speakers and active/self-powered speakers (those with their own power supply) which it seems you have. If so, your speakers must have a Toslink/SPDIF-in in order to hook-up the ATV directly. Otherwise you'll need to buy a digital to analog converter or run the signal through some kind of integrated amp first (ATV -> Integ. Amp -> Speakers). It seems the 2d gen ATVs only have 3.5mm optical out.
