What are good things to do in August outside Paris?

What are some good things to do in Paris in the evening (except for clubbing and drinking)?

  • I'm visiting Paris for work so only have evenings to experience Paris. Any suggestions?

  • Answer:

Paris is a great city for movie theaters! Many english-speaking movies are shown in English w/ French subtitles (look for "v.o. s/t") - buy "Pariscope" or check http://www.allocine.com/ - Movie theaters are typically in Les Halles and near l'Opéra... Many museums have one or two late opening evenings (typically till 10 p.m.) - for instance le Louvre and le musée d'Orsay... General stores (Galeries Lafayette) too have late opening evenings: why not go shopping? Paris is a very safe place: go for a walk! It's the best way to discover/ enjoy the city. If you're here for some time (a week or two) you could find evening cooking lessons...

As I wrote for the question “”, you should use a Vélib', it costs only €8 for seven days, and you can pick a bike from any station, then use it for 30min*, and put in any other station. It's pretty cool to use it at night, because there is nobody in the streets. (*): You can only use it the first 30 minutes, after you'll have to pay more (€1 the second half-hour, €2 the third, and €4 the others). The key is to pick one for ~20-25min, then put it in another station, and pick it again for ~20-25min, and continue. http://blog.velib.paris.fr/blog/2011/08/04/discover-paris-with-velib/

Place du Tertre and the steps of Sacré Coeur can be fun at night, depending on your level of adventure. The area around Fontaine Saint Michel is great too and maybe a little bit safer. If there is one thing I would recommend, it would be to take the metro to Notre Dame, cross the river to Saint Michel, and walk in towards Odeon - this is called the Latin Quarter and especially in the summer is fun all night until bar time. There are often musicians and lots of tourists and last time I was there I saw a capoeira troupe performing in the street. Also that is where many of the jazz clubs are, if that is your thing at all. Go down to the Seine and spend an hour or two zigzagging across it on foot by way of the various bridges, strolling down each side in turn. Go to a cafe and have a glass of wine and people-watch. Go to a fancy hotel and have a glass of wine in the bar and people-watch. Walk up the Champs Elysees from the Place de la Concorde up to the Etoile, then choose one of the other diagonals off the Etoile and walk in that direction. These are more residential neighborhoods with tons of cafes and street life. Go up to the top of the Eiffel Tower in the evening. If it's not summer, bring a warm jacket and gloves.

I would also add heading to an Fnac.  Most are open til about 8 in the evening.  And if you are adventurous take a Berlin along the banks of the Seine.
