You can also use Google Analytics to track email recipients' actions once they click through to your Web site. In most cases, you should be sending email clicks to a web site page. To start testing email campaign or newsletter elements, divide your subscriber list in half. Create your email marketing message or newsletter and change one element (subject line, from field, sending day, etc). Use your ESPs systems or embed code from Google or Yahoo Analytics, and send the two versions. You can then track which version shows the highest open rates. Do be careful about using only open rates as a success measure. Many folks view email through an email client's preview pane and open rate does not reflect how many people actually read your email. For this reason it's a good idea to have a call to action on the landing page (to which you send email recipients). You can then measure how many people took the action you are promoting (downloading a white paper, viewing a video, etc., buying your ebook, etc.)
