What exactly does an account manager do?

What is the best jobs site for posting an account manager position? Why?

  • I need to hire an account manager and I'm considering posting the job on Mashable, LinkedIn, and iMediaConnection. If you've hired or been hired through any of those, I'd love to hear about your experience.

  • Answer:

The two I would definitely hit for social media marketing positions are Mashable and Media Bistro. Both are highly targeted for that industry and also have simple, clean formats.

This is sometimes controversial, but I've had the best success with Craigslist after stacking it up against Linkedin, Monster, and some others.  CList's association with low quality applicants is often over exaggerated, or unfairly applied.  Although job seekers might use a variety of resources, Clist tends to be the common denominator.  No one would deny that there's value in targeting specific people using Linkedin, but CList shouldn't be overlooked if you're looking to get a large inbound pool of applicants to start whittling down.  When hiring AM's on niche hiring sites, I didn't notice a particular bump in quality.  These sites cast a smaller net, and because people can apply with a few clicks, many fail to follow the application instructions.  Also, these sites are more expensive and their interfaces are annoying compared to CList's straightforward email approach.

http://MarketingSherpa.com is a great place to advertise FREE for job postings and in the reverse, people seeking jobs can post for free on there as well. They break it out into regions of the Midwest. Depending on what type of account manager you're hiring for, there may be pertinent associations such as the American Marketing Association or the Public Relations Society of America or even Women in Communications. Additionally, Craigs List is a great resource, also free. I was recently hired through Craigs List by a client that refused to advertise anywhere else, and it's probably the most fun project I've ever worked on.

I found success, when I was looking for a job, on Linkedin and Guardian Jobs. I find both sites very easy to use and they are constantly updated. Hold the Front Page and Gorkana are both great sites for media-related posts.

I had tried LinkedIn to find co-founders for my new startup. But after spending nearly $800 over one month of searching (job postings + upgraded account to send out InMails, etc.), I ended up interviewing about 40 applicants, only 2 or 3 of whom were potentially qualified. And I never ended up signing them on, either (ultimately found my co-founders through a mutual friend). That comes out to roughly $800/2.5 = $320 per qualified job candidate in just one month. For a startup, that's just way too much money. The problem, therefore, with most job boards and networking sites is that they're prohibitively expensive, both per job posting, and most importantly, per qualified applicant: LinkedIn: $295 per job posting for 30 days Monster: about $300-$400 per job posting for days depending on location Careerbuilder: $419 per job posting for 30 days Dice: $495 per job posting for 30 days With our new startup, Venturocket (http://www.venturocket.com), it's totally free to post jobs. And because only genuinely qualified candidates can apply for open positions, you don't need to spend months filtering through candidates who failed to heed -- or didn't even bother to read -- your qualification requirements. I encourage you to try the other bigger sites, but would love for you to sign-up for VR and give it a shot: http://www.venturocket.com. Thanks!
