What are things to see/do in Berlin, Germany?

What are the greatest and coolest things you can do in Berlin, Germany?

  • Name things, which are truly special for Berlin. This could be anything like 'there's a great park people rarely go to', over 'there are tours of the fantastic tunnel system under the city', to 'this is the best club ever'. Pls give enough details so that people actually can enjoy the tips.

Slightly different, but: Teufelsberg Listening Post The abandoned ruins of a Cold War CIA/NSA/MI6 listening post, built on top of Berlins highest hill, made completely of WWII rubble, which in turn covers the ruins of Albert Speer's never-used military college. It's shaped like a gigantic cock-and-balls, facing east, taunting the Soviets. Need I say more? If yes: it's a bizarre construction, with a central tower that has its tarp cladding hanging in shreds and flapping in the wind, crowned by a perfectly spherical (now empty) radar dome with amazing acoustics. It's one of Berlin's highest points, the views are insane, you can see the 1936 Olympic Stadium and Le Corbusier's Unité d'habitation as well as all of Berlin from there. A wonderful place for a picknick. The buildings themselves are dark, dank, strewn with debris, full of unexpected holes in the floor and 3rd floor doors that lead into the open air. It's amazing. One of my favourite places ever. This is what it looks like from the neighboring plateau: And this is the floor underneath the top cupola: Here's a flickr set from my visit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/espylaub/sets/72157622419622622/with/3938157573/ Go there. It's amazing. Slightly dangerous, and there may be a new fence, or security people, but hey, it's very much worth the effort. Also: Berghain. It's still amazing, going up those stairs for the first time.

The Karoke in Mauerpark on a Sunday afternoon is pretty hilarious. A few thousand people (on a good) outside in the park singing along to either really crap or really good singers. The atmosphere is amazing.

As a German, I recently moved to Berlin, and I have to say that Berlin can be considered as a truly innovative and creativity hub. For me it is the New York city of Germany, and so is the variation of activities you an do there. You rarely hear someone speak German, and all cultures contribute to the unique pace and re-invention. So, to start, if you want to go out and party, start in Kreuzberg. You will find plenty of bars and pubs. If you want to eat, go to famous "Mustafa's Gemüse Döner" on Mehringdamm and try the Kebap there. It is one of the best Döner's i have tried so far and a testimonial for turkish influence in Germany. Have fun and enjoy the city !

Best club/bar in Berlin has got to be Dr. Pong. You get a ping pong bat at the door and there is one ping pong table in the center of the room. Everybody dances, chats around the ping pong table like a slow circle pit, if you miss your shot you are out, then the last two left at the table have a full game. Ping pong, Beer and music = amazing! http://drpong.net/

If you want to enjoy modern Berlin, head to the dome on top of the Reichstag. Very impressive architecturally, with a fantastic view. The ques are extremely long so try to get there either midweek or at the weekend.

Berlin has so many cool places. If you're going to go, you've GOT to go see the Berlin wall, especially the East Side Gallery, it's amazing. Also there's some amazing places to swim, in the city there's a pool ON the river, and if you're willing to go further a field (about 20 mins out on S-bahn) there's some great lakes to swim in. More info, read my blog. www.http://budgetinterrail.blogspot.co.uk/

catch the U-Bahn U8 and get out at Rosenthaler Platz. Look for a curry-wurst place called "Fleischerei" (Torstraße 116, 10119 Berlin). Yes, you can also have a snack and french fries... but when you get there, ask where the toilets are. On your way to the toilets you will find a british telephone cabin. Nice decoration for a curry-wurst place.. knock on the door and see where it takes you :)
