How to manage android service?

Which Android Device to buy for app dev (no phone service needed)?

  • I already have an iPhone with phone service, but I want an Android for testing HTML/CSS/JS/Phonegap apps I'm building. Is there a way to get an android without phone service? Which one would you recommend.

  • Answer:

I got an HTC Hero from eBay for lower-resolution/spec development and I use my HTC Desire (with phone service) for higher-res development.  At the moment, the emulator is having to suffice for tablet dev while I wait on better devices. Depending on what you're making, the emulator might be good enough to start with.  After that, eBay one of each display density listed here: http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html

If you don't need any phone-dependent features, get a , since it can simulate any resolution. See: https://plus.google.com/u/0/107708120842840792570/posts/cz5TxuoNDfG

Start with the emulators, you can build a profile for each of the top tier devices, including resolution, memory, internet access, keypad etc. Then you can get an actual device for testing. You can buy a google developer phone, but it is expensive. You can find phones online for pretty cheap, usually one version back from the current release (iphone 3, samsung galaxy etc)

Nexus 4 - it's unlocked, carrier free, is the first phone to get Android updates, and is inexpensive.
