What are the best social networking sites?

What is the best way to gather data from Pinterest or other social networking sites?

  • I'm completely new to this sort of thing, so bear with me: I've been helping a friend out with a "project" that he's working on that requires a lot of really detailed information about things like which "pins" got the most "repins" at what time of the day, etc. Obviously getting that granular is necessary to track what content is the most effective, as well as what time of the day is most effective. I hear people constantly sharing information about their findings while testing out content (things about what sort of content improved their click-through rate on the site they linked to, etc.), and I'm curious to know if there is a more effective tool out there for tracking this sort of thing. It's really hard to know what happened when you're literally pinning 100s of things each day. How do people most effectively track this kind of thing? Is it seriously as tedious as manually inputting the data into a spreadsheet? Help!

  • Answer:

Doing so will definitely break their terms of service. They currently have no API and do not want you scraping their site. I would LOVE to start collecting data from Pinterest (and I just saw that ViralHeat was) but it's a big no no. Unless you have a deal worked out with them. So all that really means is that if they spotted an IP scraping their site, they would likely block it. I'm sure they will release an API in the future. If they want to survive in this game, they have to...And I can't wait until they do!

Well, as of June 2013 Pinterest released their http://business.pinterest.com/analytics/. Web Analytics gives site owners insights into how people are interacting with pins that originate from their websites.   Some of the features they include: how many people have pinned from your site how many people have seen these pins how many people visited your site from Pinterest A selection of your most repinned, most clicked, and most recent pins so you have a better idea of what’s popular. I hope this helps! Check out: http://blog.wishpond.com/post/54110160578/how-sephora-uses-pinterest-web-analytics-to-create to figure out how to up your game on Pinterest with Web Analytics.

Unfortunately while there are hundreds (if not thousands) of tools that can get exactly the sort of data you're looking for relevant to Twitter or Facebook, Pinterest and its ecosystem aren't mature enough yet to have spawned that sort of analytics capabilities.
