Are there any good electronic bebop albums?

What are the greatest bebop jazz albums of all time?

  • Answer:

My two favorite bebop albums of all time: Sonny Side Up (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonny_Side_Up): Sonny Stitt, Sonny Rollins, and Dizzy Gillespie are the main stars in this album.  Check out the "cutting session" between the two Sonnys in the track "Eternal Triangle".  They trade solo choruses and try to outplay one another. Live at Massey Hall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jazz_at_Massey_Hall): Charlie Parker AND Dizzy Gillespie AND Bud Powell AND Max Roach AND Charles Mingus.  With this album, you should have enough energy to power a small city.  However, the sound quality isn't the best (the bass is heavily under-recorded) and Charles Mingus took the original recording and overdubbed in new bass lines.  The best version of this CD that I own is a Japanese re-mastering. Both albums are great exemplars of "jam session" playing.  It's very likely that none of the musicians rehearsed before the recording session, since they primarily play standard pieces. Both albums were recorded in the 50s, about a decade after bebop first became popular.  You can also try the early recordings in the 40s by Bird from the Verve label, but they are less full-formed (and in my opinion, more sterile than the recordings I mentioned.)

Look for the "Jazz at Massey Hall" record (various repackaging and titles). It's the live album with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Max Roach, Bud Powell, and Charles Mingus. One of the issues had the title "Greatest Jazz Concert Ever," and that's actually a defensible claim!

Just about anything with Fats Navarro is the real deal. Take a look at Tad Dameron: http://www.npr.org/blogs/ablogsupreme/2011/02/24/133899721/tadd-dameron-bebop-romanticist?sc=nl&cc=jn-20110227

The key bebop artists are Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, and the key recordings (all released originally as singles) are the recordings they made together in the 1940s.  Some people recommend Yardbird Suite: The Ultimate Collection as manageable (non-huge) collection that contains many of these recordings.

"One Night at Birdland" does it for me.  Bird, Bud and Fats, all on reasonably good days.  I'll take good Fats over Diz, but that's just me.  So that puts this a cut above "...Massey Hall"   "Sonny Side Up" is absolutely fabulous, as Charles Chen observes.  Tremendously enjoyable.

Quite a challenge of a question! The Bop masters: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, to name my personal favorites, all did record wonderful music, but you will find many CDs that offer confusing song lists. The same tune may appear repeatedly and anarchically. Music is about enjoyment so ranking is subjective but one can say, "Well, this particular music gives me the most pleasure". So, OK, let's play the game, here are some of my choices:  --Jazz at Massey Hall (often dubbed "The Greatest Jazz Concert ever" featuring Bird, Diz, Bud, Max Roach, Charles Mingus, 1953) --All of Charlie Parker's Savoy recordings (to me the foundations of bebop).  --All of his Verve recordings, (especially Blues for Alice, Little Suede Shoes, She rote, Au Privave, etc.). --Thelonious Monk, The Composer (Columbia). This particular album features some of his greatest compositions. Beboppers were responsible for some major jazz standards that you hear at jam sessions some 70 years on. --Thelonious Monk, The Complete London collection (3 CDs) 1971 (the essence of his sound captured on one of his last studio dates). --Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane 1957. A transitional recording, with the baton handed over from Monk to Trane. Guy Rico, Petit-Bourg Guadeloupe, July 29, 2016
