Medical career choices?

Medical School: What are realistic career choices for me that won't require much more university as I was training to be a physician?

  • I failed Step 2 CS of the USMLE three times. Essentially I have no chance at being a licensed physician.   I attended a medical school in the Caribbean.  I have over $50,000 in student loans.

  • Answer:

As I understand it, patent law agencies like having people trained in medicine. You can also explore a career at a consulting firm, health insurance agency, or in hospital administration. Have you taken any prep courses for Step 2 CS? Sometimes you just have to repeatedly practice the different possible scenarios so that the actual exam won't feel awkward or be such a shock. I wouldn't be so quick to give up just yet. Remember, if you stay in school, you can defer your loans. So going back to nursing school is also a very valid option. You'd only need 2 years to get a MSN, since you already did undergraduate work.

Be a nurse or technician (e.g. radiologist).

I had a friend who majorly failed his Step 2. He ended up forming a medtech startup which is a very reasonable thing for someone of your age and medical knowledge. Considering that you "only" have 50K in loans, you are a bit more flexible than MDs who have trained in the US. Alternatively, if you want to start making some money now. I would run and manage clinical trials.

Finish your MD and look into teaching positions in community colleges or PA. Over time you could open your own company, get an MBA. There's even a new program in some states where they take you as an Assistant Physician, where you don't have to recertify and is different from a PA. Good luck.

I would take it again and get ECFMG certified. Who knows what doors that certificate will open up to you in the future. There are lots of things you can do. Network and brainstorm alternative career options like start-ups, medical affairs, pharma, etc.

I agree with lots of the answers below - 1. keep taking it, with the caveat that you take some PREP courses with some organization or someone to prepare in a different manner than you are currently doing. 2. go into consulting - McKinsey is good $$$ and then usually one of the companies you consult for will offer you a job. You might end up making more money than many MDs 3. get an MBA and parlay the medical exposure/connections into a business work for a non-profit with your medical expertise. advise grants in medicine.

With an MD from a Caribbean school you might think of becoming a physician assistant. Excellent opportunities and remuneration.
