Should I switch to Linux if I want to maintain control over my computer?
-
Currently, I am running Mac OS X 10.7. and I am having this feeling that Mac OS X 11 is going to be a lot like iOS with its App approach. Windows is kind of pursuing the same path with the fusion of Windows 8 for Phones, Tablets and PCs. In the end, I am scared that it's all going to be colorful media consumption machines with some vintage camera apps and I ultimately will loose control over what's going on in the depth of my machine. Not that I am a super crack in this stuff, but I grew up with Terminal and would like to maintain the control over my computer. From what I understood Linux would offer that. Or is my whole thesis wrong? Help me please.

Answer:
Linux will give you more control, but that doesn't mean that you will lose control with Mac OS XI, mainly because we still don't know what is going to look like. I remember when Steve Jobs presented Mac OS 10.0, he said it was going to be Apple's strategy for the decade, but that was 2000 and we're still using Mac OS X in 2012. We don't know when Mac OS XI will be released. The fact is you don't really have as much control with your Mac as you think, not now, if you don't believe me then try removing the Finder from the OS. With Linux you will get maximum freedom. I think is important to understand why Apple does this, and I think it is related to user experience. They don't give you maximum control because if you have it, you could ruin your experience. I'm not saying that I agree with this way of thinking but I think is what they think. It is the same reason why they don't let you remove the camera when you buy a new MacBook, you might save yourself 15 bucks but your overall experience will be limited. Apple knows this and they don't let you have that kind of freedom, if they could, I'm sure they'd tell you they do it "for your own good". Linux will give you more freedom, more than you will need. That doesn't mean that you will have the same experience that you have with Mac OS X. For me, Mac OS X has the best UI out there, it's just beautiful and enjoyable to work with. I use Linux everyday and I love it, but the UI it is not quite as polished as Mac OS. There has been amazing improvements over the years but is still behind.
