You can take snapshots from Logical Volume Manager (LVM) partitions by making use of LVM. Newer filesystems on Linux like btrfs and zfs allow you to take snapshots of filesystem data.

dd if =/  | ssh remote_user@remote_ip "of=/mnt/media1/" Assuming you can do ssh to remote server you want to take backup and you have root permission from the server you want to take backup of .. Note: I am not sure if this works 100% as I have never tried this before.. try on your own risk..
