What does being an American mean nowadays(2013)?

  • With immigration issues, laws against everything, corruption, greed and poverty, what does it mean to be an American to you (if you're American). If you're not, what do you think being an American means?

    What is the thing in common between Sarah Palin, Michael Jordan, OJ Simpson or John Pike (google him) or the cashier in your local market ? only one thing : the passport or the ID card. There is some american communists, some gay, some racists, some fun, some gifted, some very smart. I'm not American but i have meet a lot of them since i live near Paris. I have meet pure assholes and some very interesting people. In France, many says Americans are dumb, they know nothing except their country but i know some French who are as dumb. For me, speaking about a country with 313 millions of people means absolutely nothing, i think that W. BUSH is a war criminal and that Stevie Wonder is what an angel should sounds. For me, being American means nothing as French means nothing too so Chinese or Russian or whatever. Only the character of the people matters.

As a American myself I think the meaning of being a American has changed since our founding fathers created this country. It used to mean being a rode-model and accomplishing our dreams but nowdays (2015) it means just getting threw life and trying to not be on obama care and food stamps and being supported by the goverment. Our people have really let our founding fathes down. As a country we got so used to being the greatest we took it for granted and forgot what made us the greatest. We lost control of  our freedom and over used of goverment power.
