What are the best hikes and things to do when entering the Grand Canyon from the south entrance?

  • My girlfriend and I are visiting the Grand Canyon during the day back-to-back days (i.e. staying outside the Canyon and driving in both days). What are some of the best things to do and hikes to go on when entering from the south entrance?

    One suggestion I have, although not hiking related, is to take the chopper and fly around the GC. The airport is near the village on 64 north (but I think you have to book early): http://www.grandcanyonairport.org See which and when of these companies are flying from that airport: - http://www.grandcanyonairlines.com - http://www.papillon.com - http://www.maverickhelicopter.com They can combine the flight with a boat trip on Colorado river. Another thing not to miss there is the Desert View Watchtower http://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/placestogo.htm - in the middle on this page (it's on 64 east - that's why I said in another answer to go around).

The South Entrance is the main entrance.  Just south of the South Entrance is the town of Tusayan and the airport for the Helicopter rides.  Tusayan also has an IMAX theater and a great movie recreating the John Wesley Powell raft trip through the Canyon. As you enter the partk the Park Service has a newspaper that describes the Park and current activities.  Go first to the Visitor Center at Mather Point.  Then head to the Grand Canyon Village.  I have several other Quora answers on things to do in the park.
