Does Google penalize you for duplicate content?

I have a classifieds site with people posting from across the web. How do I ensure that Google does not penalize me for duplicate content?

  • Answer:

Well, you want your pages indexed, so don't use the noindex tag... that takes you out of the equation. Google looks at duplicate content in a variety of ways, but it's main source of comparison are the TITLE and META Description tags.  Make those unique, and you're most likely not going to get any heat. Ensuring that the rest of the page beyond the postings is unique as well will help your cause.

This is a pretty complex question and the question largely depends on the structure of your website, what fields your dynamically generating and if you're putting the unique content that users write in more than one area without using the proper tags for example the use of rel="canonical".   If I was you, I would take a look at Craigslist and analyze what they are doing to prevent the duplicate content plenty. At the end of the day if it is duplicate content then you need to noindex / no follow it or it will hurt the quality, unique content you have on the website.

Perform a manual scan of content everyday. Make sure none of the contents are duplicated. Should you have no time to manual check because it's wasting your time, consider hiring a link builder  http://www.agentsofvalue.com/seo-link-building/

have them post details on where their items are, pick up policies, state of items, their own warranties etc
