How do I add people as friends?

How common is it for Google+ people to add both "important" circles and "friends" circles?

  • I have those two circles in addition to a following circle. But I mostly check my "important" circle - which is basically people I follow (and who may not know me), but who post a lot of content I like.

  • Answer:

It's pretty common. I see people suggesting this very idea quite often in the stream. Most people will have an "Important" or "Interesting" circle containing people with great content that they actively follow the stream of, as well as a few minor circles that they can follow altogether when they're lumped in the default stream. Personally, I have a couple "Important" circles (named around specific groups, rather than being called "Important"), but they serve the same purpose: at least once or twice a day I'll open up that circle's stream and read most of the new posts.

Hint: you can also adjust the "volume" of each of those circles in your default home stream. Just go to each circle's view and click its settings gear. First, you can choose if you want to be notified of every post by anyone in that circle. Next you can choose if you want to see posts at all from that circle in your home stream. If you check that you do, you can then choose to see "more," "standard" or "fewer" posts from that circle in your home stream.
