I have a #flash question, has anyone ever heard of having a shockwave or flash file as an EXE load on someone's homepage? This sounds wrong.
-
I'm developing a website for a client, whose insisting on having their flash developer create a flash file. Its supposed to be "non-flash friendly" if flash is not detected. The html and script pull up an EXE file. This seems like a security issue or just a bad practice... Is this normal for flash or shockwave websites??

Answer:
Not unless the exe is just a name of a CGI backend that actually generates a webpage, similar to php/asp files. This can be easily checked based on the MIME type returned by your server when you access the exe file.

Absolutely abnormal, and there's no way that this will ever work within a browser. At the very best, an ignorant and un-safety-conscious user would be able to download the .exe and run it, but only after enduring multiple warnings from their browser and operating system before doing so. Flash has the ability to publish what are called "projectors" - these are standalone applications that wrap the .swf up with the Flash Player runtime and allow it to be run like any other executable. They were originally developed as a means to distribute Flash content in scenarios where it's impossible to detect the presence of the Flash Player on the user's machine (CD-ROMs, offline kiosks, etc).
