How do I setup a dns server?

System Administration: How do I setup DNS records, such as CNAME, A, nameservers, on Mac OS X Lion Server?

  • I have a mac mini server that I'd like to use for testing purposes. I'd like to setup DNS on it so I can point a domain name to it. I know I'll need to setup primary zones, A records etc.

  • Answer:

With your registrar, you can simply point the records to the server's IP address. To host DNS on your Lion server is a little more involved and you will need to make use of the DNS server functionality in the Server app: http://mac101.net/content/how-to/mac-os-x-server-setting-up-a-dns-server/ This is simpler on Mac than, for example, setting up a DNS server like PowerDNS, since installing on OS X is far different, and much more involved than on other BSD systems: https://gist.github.com/mkyed/1694240
