What are the simple differences between engines?

What are the differences between the latest JavaScript engines in Opera, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Safari?

  • What interesting differences in attacking the speed problem exists between modern JavaScript engines like V8, (Extreme?) Squirelfish, Carakan, SpiderMonkey and Chakra?

  • Answer:

The main difference between these engines is that while Opera, IE, Chrome and Safari use one engine for JIT, Firefox has actually three: TraceMonkey (Tracing JIT) and Jaegermonkey (method JIT) with TypeInference engine (it's not yet in the current version). It switches between these to get the best optimization.

Spidermonkey supports more platforms than (chrome) V8. I now use Midori and some times Seamonkey if on x86. Debian dropped Iceape (portable unbranded Seamonkey).
