Best way to communicate with new client as a freelance graphic designer?

What's the most suitable way to terminate a client's small web design project?

  • Almost a whole year ago I started a a small web design project for a client. The client has not been too bad overall however I am simply too busy and the project has dragged on for months. This was one of my first projects as a web designer, and we did not sign any type of contract for the work. In addition, I severely underestimated the amount of work needed for the project, reflected in the amount I charged which was less than $300 total. What is the best way to kindly terminate the project without the client getting too upset.

  • Answer:

Eat the $300, and point them to another designer. If the job isn't finished, you might have a hard time getting your money out of them. And if you finish it, you'll have to sink more time and energy into it. $300 is not a lot of money. And in this business, you want to minimize conflict and keep your reputation intact.

I would propose charging an hourly rate for any future work, adding that the project has exceeded the original scope. That could lead to ending it without too much drama. Sometimes it can help to point low-budget clients to other web design companies, as a show of good faith - i.e. 'perhaps these x,y,z companies can help you complete your project.'

You could always hand it off to a student or intern if you wanted + let him/her use it as a folio spot.
