How difficult is Neuroscience as an undergraduate major?

What do neuroscience programs look for in a prospective graduate student candidate with a non-neuroscience undergraduate degree?

  • I have been thinking more and more lately about applying for a Ph.D. in neuroscience but my background is in the humanities and I have done nothing associated with neuroscience in my career. Will this make me less competitive than other candidates? What can I do to overcome this disadvantage? Note: I want to come at Neuroscience from the Buddhist meditation perspective because I feel that both fields could enrich each other deeply. Any other advice would be deeply helpful.

  • Answer:

The most important thing is doing research. Try to find somebody doing neuroscience research in your area of interest or near your area of interest and become a tech. If you haven't had any formal math or science exposure at all, you might want to go back to school and take math and biology courses, but the research experience is extremely important.
