Abnormal Psychology: What personality disorders are least known to the affected individual?

  • I started thinking about this when I became aware that schizophrenics (not a personality disorder) tend to be very well aware that they are schizophrenic. Manic depression also seems to be well known to the individual. On the other hand of course, some things are defined by not being known. So that led me to wonder about the spectrum of awareness among disorders where both seem possible. Or, how is awareness distributed among the personality disorders. I'm especially interested in which single one is least known. (Narcissistic?)

  • Answer:

Antisocial personality disorder.  These people laugh at the "stupidity" of the person conferring the diagnosis when they are diagnosed.  They see nothing wrong with themselves.  But insight is a difficult and tricky business for many diagnoses.  Some people have partial insight or have more insight at certain times, and less at other times.  The book "I am not sick, I don't need help" by Xavier Amador discusses this issue with particular attention to people with schizophrenia and bipolar illness.
