    There are many ways to calculate that, and how you do it will depend on your organization's situation. One way that I've found useful is understanding the Life time value of an email subscriber, which involves understanding your email list growth, churn, revenue generated, and costs (email ops and general business) to understand the average profit generated by a subscriber.  I would suggest checking out Successful Email Strategies by Arthur Sweetser, which has a great chapter on this.
